Checkered coils are produced on a hot strip mill. After the slab is reheated and rolled to the base thickness (as per HRC process), the strip passes through a patterned finishing stand engraved with the desired design (diamond, lentil, etc.). The pattern is impressed onto the steel surface at temperatures above 800°C under high pressure. The depth and uniformity of the pattern are controlled by the roll design and reduction in this stand. The patterned strip is then cooled and coiled. This process ensures anti-slip properties with pattern heights typically ranging from 0.5–1.2 mm.
