Wire rod is produced on a high-speed wire rod mill. The billet is reheated and rolled through a series of stands to final diameters (5.5–16 mm) at speeds up to 120 m/s. After the last stand, the rod is cooled on a Stelmor conveyor with controlled air cooling to obtain the desired microstructure (ferrite-pearlite or tempered martensite). It is then coiled into rings or packed.
